Chapter 1: Diesel Powered Type

1) Trailer Mounted Engine Driven Centrifugal Pump

Introduction: Diesel Engine Irrigation Pumps mainly refer to those water pumps powered by diesel engine, because there is no source of electricity available to power the pump’s motor. It is usually connected with high performance centrifugal pump, like self priming pump, multistage pump, mix-flow pump and split casing pump. We also define it as agriculture water pump.

We usually could find 2 kind of engine driven irrigation centrifugal pumps on the market. One is mounted on the skid, the other is trailer mounted. You could often see lake irrigation pump with trailer.

Trailer mounted type is widely used due to its mobility. 2 tires and 4 tires are both popular for specific environment.

Analysis: Most of the irrigation places are short of electricity. Especially for agricultural dominated areas, a high-efficiency diesel powered pump is absolutely a good choice. And trailer mounted irrigation pump is easily to move to the suitable irrigation place. So you don’t need to spend more time to consider the irrigation layout. When some places are need to be watered, you could just move the pump to the place. Irrigation pump repair is always a big issue for users. Diesel engine type has very simple structure which is easy to maintain. It is absolutely the best irrigation pump among the list.

Introduction: Literally it refers to stationary pump include diesel engine and centrifugal pump. A fixed skid is necessary to set under the pump and engine. The shape of skid will be a little different as per the specific situation.

Analysis: Comparing the trailer type, the skid type fixed on the ground is more stable. Farm irrigation pump tend to choose this type. Some people put the pump on their truck so that they could proceed to the next stage as soon as possible. If you work on large scale irrigation, it helps a lot. Oh, forgot to say, centrifugal irrigation pumps offer a wide range of different capacities. This is not what you could expect from others on the list.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

3) Vertical Turbine Diesel Engine Pump

turbine irrigation pump

Introduction: Vertical turbine pumps are mostly used to pump water from deep pits or wells to some sort of water distribution system. Diesel powered type include a gear box and diesel engine instead of upside motor.

Analysis: For most of people, vertical turbine pump is still a big cost in the all irrigation system. Even its performance is very strong in the narrow tight deep well.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

4) Portable Irrigation Pump

Introduction: Very small or light pump. Gasoline (Petrol) engine is also available to drive the pump. Therefore, it is also named gas irrigation pump. 1hp, 1.5hp, 2 hp irrigation pump are main models.

Analysis: Small shape determine its capacity. Easily operate and maintain, useful tool for home yard, garden or lawn’s irrigation water system. Weakness is not convenient for large scale irrigation. If you need a high pressure pump, it is not appropriate. Tell you a secret. If you search trash pump, you will find more suppliers.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

5) Tractor PTO Pump

PTO irrigation pump

Introduction: PTO pumps are usually supplied mounted on a two-wheeled cart making them very easy to handle, using PTO drive shaft to make the pump rotate.

Analysis: If you have a tractor, it should be a great partner for irrigation. But it is not economical if you go to buy a tractor to match the PTO pump.

Rating: ⭐⭐

6) Motorbike Water Pump

motorbike irrigation pump

Introduction: Utilizing the motorbike to drive the pump. The theory is as similar as PTO pump. If you pay more attention to observe, you could find a lot of DIY pumps among the folks.

Analysis: This is definitely a way to save the cost. But it is never a solution for long time irrigation.

Chapter 2: Solar Power Type

7) Submersible Pump

solar submersible irrigation pump

Introduction: Like turbine pump, deep-well submersible pumps are suitable to draw water from deep underground, thin wells, bore-wells etc. Solar submersible pump use dc power to drive the pump body.

Analysis: Most of countries issued favorable policy to support solar energy. After all, solar is sustainable energy. Once the complete solar system is installed, people feel it will save them a lot of time and cost in a long future. However, solar pump is still in the developing stage, requiring of related inverter and solar panel with high performance. Most of suppliers could only provide low motor power pumps. Besides, you have to figure out the sunshine duration in your place before purchasing a pump.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

8) Surface Centrifugal Pump

solar surface pump

Introduction: A typical solar surface centrifugal pump includes different kinds centrifugal pump, solar panels, investor,  solar array, storage tank and controller.

Analysis: Choosing a suitable pump is not an easy work. You need to consider many factors. For example, which type’s ROI is higher, diesel or solar? Which one is better, submersible or surface?

But you must go through this process in person, only you know every details of your farm. if you really feel it is frustrated to think and plan, CONTACT US. 24/7 available for you.

Chapter 3: Electrical Powered Type

9) Vertical Turbine Pump

vertical turbine irrigation pump

Introduction: Vertical turbine pumps have the motor located above ground, connected via a long vertical shaft to impellers at the bottom of the pump.

Analysis: People always compare vertical turbine pump with submersible pump. The most obvious difference is the position of the motor. This one is upside, submersible type is below the pump body.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

10) Electric Submersible Pump

Introduction: Electric Submersible Pump is a device which has a hermetically sealed motor close-coupled to the pump body. The whole assembly is submerged in the fluid to be pumped.

Analysis: It has high requirement for well diameter. If you want high capacity of water, you must widen the well’s diameter. Otherwise the pump could not be put into the well. For deep and shallow well submersible pump, we also have to consider the cooling issue of submersible motor. Drip irrigation system usually include an electrical submersible pump.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

11) Propeller (Axial Flow) Pump

Introduction: An axial-flow pump, or AFP, is a common type of pump that essentially consists of a propeller (an axial impeller) in a pipe. The propeller can be driven directly by a sealed motor in the pipe or by electric motor or petrol/diesel engines mounted to the pipe from the outside or by a right-angle drive shaft that pierces the pipe.

Analysis: If you don’t need too much water for irrigation, there is no need to use this type of pump. Installation is not easy.

Rating: ⭐⭐

12) Surface Centrifugal Pump

Introduction: Centrifugal pumps are often chosen for their high flow rate capabilities, abrasive solution compatibility, mixing potential, as well as their relatively simple engineering.

Analysis: I highly recommend to use centrifugal pumps. Because it almost could be used in every place which need a water pump. The reason I give it 3 stars is due to electricity not available in all the places. So if you would like to use centrifugal pumps, I suggest you use diesel engine driven pump. However, many people use small electrical centrifugal pump, like small jet pump for home garden water sprinkler system.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Chapter 4: Manual Type

13) Manual Irrigation Pump

manual irrigation pump

Introduction: It is also called hand pump. They are water-lifting devices that can be operated manually to withdraw water from surface water sources, groundwater sources and reservoirs, or to pump water into distribution systems.

Analysis: About 20 years ago, you could find this pump everywhere in rural places, not only for irrigation, but also for many people’s normal water using. Today all people choose more advanced ways to draw water. But every product has its value to exist in this world. If no power sources, no diesel, no electricity and no solar, will you use this pump?

irrigation pump selection tips

After reading this list, I suppose you still have no idea to choose a suitable irrigation pump.

Don’t worry. I got 3 basic tips to help you keep going.

No 1: Check your water source

You have to confirm the basic situation of your water source. It is also called application. Figure out these questions below.

  • How long is the water source from your pump?
  • What’s the self-priming height? Deep well or river?
  • What’s the capacity of the water source?

No 2: Confirm the irrigation requirement

Make clear of the data in the irrigation.

  • How much water does each irrigation need?
  • What’s the vertical height from pump to your irrigation address?
  • Is there any pressure need for irrigation sprinkler?

No 3: Set you budget

Great Irrigation Solution always bring good ROI. Choosing a pump is only a part of installing an irrigation system.

Think about the following questions before you start purchasing a pump.

  • How much money do you plan to consume on the pump?
